Welcome to the home page of Sheila Jordan Fibre Artist based near Kells, Co Kilkenny.
My practice is based on ancient crafts and traditions, wool fibre is magically transformed using soap and water and good old fashioned elbow grease. Wool fibres have little scales which open when wet and with the addition of friction, heat and a little soap to help the fibres slide over each other they become entangled and the wool felts.
I work in 2D and 3D making sculptural and framed work for exhibition and also rugs/wall hangings and wearable pieces. Each piece is hand made from my studio at home, the materials used come from natural sources and include merino wool, silk, cotton and other more unusual fibres for example bamboo, soya bean. The work is produced through a combination of wet felting and dry felting techniques with the emphasis on colour and texture.
Dry felting or needle felting is a more modern technique adapted from industry; a fine barbed needle is used to entangle the wool fibres, the one way action of the barbs drives the fibres together thus creating the felted fabric.
My techniques are constantly evolving and developing.
I exhibit regularly with Filament a vibrant group of textile artists founded in 2007 based in the South East of Ireland.
We have exciting plans for the future so keep a look out for us.
